The Brickhouse: The Kitchen - Callaway Plantation, Washington, Georgia

Essential elements of life.

Traditionally the kitchens, or cookhouses, were detattched from the house themselves being most work was done over a fire-fed stove.  Anyone who has endured a Southern summer especially without air conditioning would fully understand you would want to keep this inferno away from the living quarters.  On the note of living quarters, that is the other reason for the separation of the two: Fire Hazard.  Fires were and still are to this day one of the fastest ways to bring down a building.  Dsepite the hazards surrounding the kitchen, it is the beating heart of any home, brining together the family for meal time 365 days a year.
